As a Registered Nurse and Lactation Consultant, I’ve had the opportunity to support thousands of moms through the breastfeeding process. From a world-class children’s hospital to the frontlines of public health, my experience has taught me that every mom and baby are unique, and there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach. My PERSONAL breastfeeding experience has given me a greater appreciation for the challenges of pumping, tongue tie, supply regulation, night feedings, and nipple trauma.
I’ve also learned that my profession is not always synonymous with consistency or quality. I continue to hear horror stories from moms who describe their past Lactation Consultants as “hard-line nipple Nazis” or “granola-munching hippies”. At the same time, breastfeeding is quickly becoming a hot-button political issue. Some feel the need to self-righteously shame moms who aren’t able or willing to breastfeed, while others justify their choice to bottle-feed by resenting or even rejecting the most fundamental evidence-based research on infant health. And for the small percentage of moms who are able to breastfeed effortlessly, it can be difficult to understand the deep-rooted barriers that inhibit so many women from successfully breastfeeding or seeking help to do so — not just physical, but social, cultural, and political.
I founded Boob & Bottle to provide a more balanced, non-judgmental approach to breastfeeding that works for moms, not against them. My mission is to align the leading science of the day with the unique needs of each and every mom, never losing sight of the fact that the best approach is always the one that works for YOU and YOUR baby.
